Minehead's seafront

Finishing touches were made to Minehead's promenade, sea wall and beach in spring 2000 - completing the transformation of the town's seafront and one of its key visitor attractions!

The project saw the removal of the old wall and the building of a new, higher one to protect Minehead from flooding.

The scheme also involved the building of four groynes - barriers to minimise the loss of the new beach material. These were made from rock brought to Minehead by train from the Mendip Hills.

Some 300,000 tonnes of sand was dredged from the middle of the Bristol Channel and pumped ashore to raise the level of the beach by 2 metres.

The Agency's sea defense scheme has also greatly improved access to the beach for disabled visitors and families with pushchairs.

Further improvements to the seafront were implements by West Somerset District Council and included the installation of new lighting and street furniture to make the seafront more attractive for local residents and the town's many thousands of visitors.

The overall project to build the sea wall, raise the level of the beach and enhance the sea front cost approximately 14 million. Funding was provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Environment Agency, England Regional Development Agency and the European Regional Development Fund.

Located right by the beach is Minehead Golf Club. A popular footpath runs from the Golf club to Dunster Beach and then on to Blue Anchor Bay. At the other end of the beach there is Minehead's picturesque harbour, the start of the South West Peninsular Coast Path and miles of attractive walking country on North Hill.
